Explore historical Menorca

The human history of Menorca starts in prehistoric times. Remnants like taula, which is often described as the Stonehenge of Menorca indicate that humans have been living on the island for a very long time. You can still visit these prehistoric sites today.

During Roman times, the Balearic islands of Menorca and Mallorca were used as bases for pirates in the Mediterranean. They used them as their base to attack Roman ships - until the Romans decided to invade Menorca. Throughout the centuries the island often became a playball in the games of power. The Muslims arrived on the island in 903. Ciutadella was made the capital of the island during their rule - it was the capital of Menorca until 1722. You can still see the Moorish influences in the architecture of the city. Stroll around the city to travel back in time.

Discover mystical Menorca

Many myths surround the island of Menorca. One of those myths is surrounding a pirate named Xoroi. You might remember that we mentioned the pirate attacks that occurred during Roman times, but they continued even in the 16th century - this time they were hitting Menorca. One of those infamous pirates was Xoroi who was known for stealing food. He fell in love with a girl from the island. Nobody knew about their romance and one day the girl just disappeared. When it snowed, the inhabitants discovered footsteps in the snow which they followed. They were led to Cales Coves where they discovered the two of them and the three children that they now shared. Xoroi panicked and jumped into the sea. His eldest son followed him. No one ever saw them again.

Sailing conditions in Menorca

Menorca is a great place for a sailing vacation. Charter a yacht to discover all the fantastic hidden bays and beaches the island has to offer.

Like many islands in the Mediterranean sea, Menorca offers sunshine almost all year round. The best time to go sailing here is between April and October, but feel free to sail here all year round. June, July and August are the most popular months, meaning that the island becomes a little more crowded during this period. Especially beginners will appreciate the area to practice their sailing skills.

The Northern part of the island is famous for its natural beauty and coastlines. Many unusual beaches can be found here. The South is a bit less adventurous, but just as beautiful. Many parts of the island here are filled with pine trees, making you think of Christmas in the summer.

Pros of renting a catamaran in Menorca

Their shallow drafts make catamarans the perfect boat for exploring more remote beaches like Cala Turqueta which is going to mesmerize you with its turquoise waters and white sandy beach. Cons of renting a catamaran in Menorca

One of the downsides of renting a catamaran in Menorca is its size. Of course it's great to have more space, but this also comes with navigating a boat with extra space and trying to find a spot for mooring at a marina. Especially during the busy summer months it might cause some issues. But don’t worry, it’s much nicer to find a spot to anchor in a secluded bay around the island anyway.
