By boat, you can easily reach Ibiza’s hidden treasures – from the historic Old Town of Ibiza and San Antonio to the picturesque beaches, coves, and rocky grounds all across the island. The island’s natural beauty and excellent cruising grounds exceed its well-known reputation as a party spot, making it the perfect destination for your next sailing holiday in Spain.

What kind of boat licence do you need with a boat hire in Ibiza?

You can always rent a boat with a skipper so that you neither have to worry about discovering the most beautiful routes nor a boat licence. If you feel adventurous enough to sail through the Mediterranean waters in Ibiza, you need to consider the following:

You can rent a boat without a boat licence in Ibiza when the boat is up to five meters long and holds a maximum motor power of 15hp or a sailboat that’s up to six meters long; you are only allowed to sail during daylight hours without a licence

If you do have a boat licence, the following applies according to Spanish law:

  • EU citizens can operate a boat in Spanish waters with a valid boat licence, eg a French citizen who received their boat licence in France can operate a boat in Spain

  • EU citizens who received their boat licence in a country other than their country of origin must prove that they are either a resident in that country or have been at the time of receiving the licence, eg a French citizen who has a Portuguese boat licence must prove that they are either a resident in Portugal or have been at the time of receiving their boat licence

  • If you are an EU citizen and want to head into Spanish waters with a boat that you rented outside of Spain, you can do so considering the restrictions explained above

  • Non-EU citizens need a specific certificate to operate a boat in Spanish waters - they can apply for it through a consulate

Hire a boat with or without a skipper in Ibiza

Exploring the waters of Ibiza offers both skippered and non-skippered boat hire options, each with its own set of pros and cons. Opting for a skippered boat in Ibiza allows you to sit back and relax as an experienced captain navigates the seas, making it an ideal choice for those less familiar with boating. On the other hand, choosing a non-skippered boat provides the freedom to chart your own course and explore Ibiza's coastline independently. However, this option requires boating skills and navigation knowledge. Your decision should hinge on your experience level, preferences, and the kind of adventure you envision for your time in Ibiza.

The top routes for a yacht hire in Ibiza

Start your private sailing holiday with a boat rental in Ibiza in the northwest of the island between San Antonio and San Vicente and sail to Puerto de Ibiza. The coast of the northwestern part of the island is lined with almond, olive and fig trees, picturesque woods and green valleys. When sailing this route, you will inevitably discover Ibiza’s large and small bays with stunning white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. How is this not an invitation to relax in the sun?

Before heading down to Puerto de Ibiza stop at Cala Mastella. This fantastic little cove is surrounded by lush nature and offers a great little beach and romantic seaside restaurant.

Another stunning route leads you all the way down the western side of the island to the island of Formentera. Start in San Antonio and enjoy the magical views.

An alternative route is to do a complete loop around the island of Ibiza, with the possibility of stopping off at Formentera. Sailing around Ibiza is a true delight as you get to see the island from a different perspective and can stop at any little bay or beach you please. Thanks to the island’s compact size, you can sail around Ibiza in a couple of days or you can extend your trip to do some island hopping around Mallorca, Minorca and Formentera
